Germany’s Election
Germany’s election ends Chancellor Angela Merkel’s 16 years in power.
However, she could remain at her post for weeks or months while parties try to cobble together a coalition. Germany’s chancellor is not directly elected but chosen through a vote in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, after a government has been formed. The main parties want a new government in place by the time Germany takes over the leadership of the G7 group of nations in January.
