Are We on the Brink of… The Battle of Gog and Magog?

The Sixth Trumpet War and the Battle of Armageddon are coming

Ezekiel 37 contains the amazing prophecy about the rebirth of the nation of Israel. After 1,878 years of Jewish exile from their Promised Land, that prophecy was fulfilled on May 14, 1948.

In the next two chapters, Ezekiel 38-39, a prophecy is given about a war called the Battle of Gog and Magog. During this battle, many nations of the world will invade the nation of Israel. In verses 2-6, several of the nations that will participate in the invasion are specifically named.

One of the invaders is called the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Webster’s Third International Dictionary defines Meshech as the word for Moschi from which comes the word Moscow. Of course, Moscow is the capital of Russia. There is also a Tobol River in Russia and a city of 47,000 called Tobolsk.

Verse 5 of the chapter says that Persia will be one of the invaders of Israel during the Battle of Gog and Magog. The nation of Iran was known as Persia until 1935 when Reza Shah asked foreign diplomats to begin using the name of Iran.

So the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 states that Russia and Iran, along with other nations, will invade Israel during the Battle of Gog and Magog. Russia and Iran have been close allies for a long time. As a result of the recent Syrian conflict, both of them now have troops in Syria, located just across Israel’s northern border. Because Ezekiel 38 says that Russia and Iran will invade Israel during the Battle of Gog and Magog, many people are wondering if the time for that apocalyptic battle has arrived.

The Battle of Gog and Magog is the Battle of Armageddon

Many have taught that the Battle of Gog and Magog is a different war than the Battle of Armageddon. However, we can prove conclusively that they are one and the same.

Revelation 19:11-21 describes the Second Coming of Jesus Christ during the Battle of Armageddon. Verses 17-21 describe Armageddon as “the supper of the great God” when the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air will be called to eat the flesh of kings, captains and mighty men.

Ezekiel 39:17-20 gives the same description of the Battle of Gog and Magog. Ezekiel was commanded to speak unto the fowls of the air and the beasts of the field, saying to them, “Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth…”. (Ezekiel 39:18)

Since we can clearly see that the Battle of Gog and Magog is the same as the Battle of Armageddon, it is obvious that this battle cannot take place for at least another seven to ten years, or perhaps a little longer. We know this because the Bible prophesies that a Palestinian-Israeli peace agreement will be signed. This agreement will mark the beginning of the Final Seven Years to Armageddon. That agreement has not yet been signed.

Then What is All the Present
Conflict About?

Revelation 9:13-16 prophesies a war that will occur before the Gog-Magog War. Since it happens at the sounding of the Sixth Trumpet, we refer to this war as the Sixth Trumpet War or the Euphrates River War.

This war will begin from the Euphrates River, will involve an army of 200 million and will result in the killing of one-third of the world’s population.

ISIS has captured between 50-70% of the Euphrates River over the last two years. Sixty nations have now joined Barack Obama’s coalition against ISIS. Besides this, Russia, Iran, China and Iraq have troops in the area and are fighting against ISIS. Much of this fighting is taking place up and down the Euphrates River.

Are We in the Sixth Trumpet War Right Now?

The stage is perfectly set for the Sixth Trumpet War. However, I cannot say with absolute certainty that this war has begun. If the present conflict in the Euphrates area doesn’t ignite the war of Revelation 9:13-16, then some other situation will soon arise to trigger the prophesied war.

What We Know for Sure

The prophecies are very clear, and they never fail. Two massive wars are coming very soon. The Sixth Trumpet war will kill one-third of mankind (over 2 billion people). Armageddon will threaten the existence of the nation of Israel and will result in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The present situation in the Middle East is setting the stage for both of these wars.

What should We do?

The only answer to the world’s problems is Jesus Christ. Only His return at Armageddon will save the world from total destruction. Neither politicians, governments, humanitarian organizations nor armies will save us. The only safety is in a close and sure relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Sixth Trumpet War and the Battle of Armageddon are coming–
and soon. However, the scriptures tell us clearly: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)

I do not think the War of God and Magog is the Armageddon war. I believe this war comes soon after the rebirth of Israel. It makes no mention of the reign of the Messiah. Also there is a very well defined set of countries in the Ezekiel war very unlike “all the corners of the earth” (Rev 20:8) Also the end of the wars have different outcomes. Life continues after the Ezekiel war, bodies and weapons are gathered for 7 years and the temple will be built (Ezekiel 40-48) . It would be interesting to hear what your thoughts are as to how the Temple gets built without a major change in the Muslim states. The Ezekiel war makes a clear way for the rebuilding of the Temple. Jesus has to rule from there upon his return. The Anti-christ needs it for mid-tribulation. At the time of Armageddon, Satan and his followers are judged and destroyed into the “lake of fire” (Rev 20:10). The heavens and the earth are destroyed and replaced (how do you burn weapons for 7 years?) New Heaven and New Earth.

      Hello I.B. Stottlemyer,

      please consider Ezekiel 38 :19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Now compare this to the Battle of Armageddon in Zechariah 14: Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
9 And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.
15 And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.

Notice the great shaking and earthquakes moving mountains, every mans sword against each other, plague from the wrath of God.

Now look at Revelation 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

Ezekiel 39:17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord God.21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.

Notice that these two events are absolutely the same.

  2. I don’ believe that Gog and Magog and Armageddon are the same . Gog and Magog is an Islamic on Israel. Armageddon is the war of all wars, all nations will come against Israel, then Jesus will come with his saints, will need more scripture to agree with you.

      Hello Pat,
Notice the similarities to these verses, we have the Lord’s wrath is being prepared to be poured out,a great shaking/earthquake, mountains are removed, great hail stones, etc.
Ezekiel 38:18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my fury shall come up in my face.19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Matthew 24:29 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Revelation 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Revelation 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Revelation 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

All of these are at the Second Coming of Jesus.

The scriptures below are also at the second coming and the Lord will let His name be known to all and they will know there is One Lord and His name is one…

Ezekiel 39:7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel.

Zechariah 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
9 And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.

The war of Armageddon or Megiddo is the same as that of Gog. Armageddon is the plain of Megiddo where the wars of the past often took place. There can not be two end-time wars, only one will suffice because of the use of atomic weapons and especially Elohim’s weapon, Keli.

  4. Sarah Bullins

Is it not the length of this war to be 40 years from the starting of it? It started 7 year and 11 months or a little more right? I had a wierd idea that in Genesis with God created the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7, after notice 1 yeah as 1000 days with the Lord and the 1000 year reign of Christ I think it’s like a warning about when it will take place, for who ever will figure that out anyway either that or I’m just mental, think about it though it makes alot of sense don’t it

  5. Robert Goedde

I agree with your summation about the two wars and I like the reference to the 1st battle as the “6th trumpet war.” At the the sounding of the seventh trumpet, the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and His Christ. Literally, the millennial reign of Christ has already begun at the seventh trumpet. Christ is reigning (Rev.11:17) with His great power. This is the same power that He said people would see Him coming with, along with angels, in verses a like Matt. 16:27 and others. The 200,000,000 strong army is the Lord’s angels (Psalm 68:17, Rev. 5:11). The recipients of the Lord’s wrath in this battle are the “round about” and “surrounding” nations. A simple word search of those phrases will bring up numerous references from which to glean additional details about the battle. This battle is most likely a direct fulfillment of the Psalm 83 war.
This 6th trumpet battle will most likely occur about 30 days before the end of the 70th week. At the end of the prophetic week, when Christ returns in Rev. 19 with His bride, His robe is red already from the blood stains received from the first battle described in Isaiah 63.
Rev. 10:7, “in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound” so after the sixth trumpet but before the seventh, “then the mystery of God is finished.” Christ has returned, begun His earthly reign. There is no longer a mystery about what will occur, Christ is reigning. My guess is this will be immediately after the death, resurrection and ascension of the two witnesses of Rev. 11. Chronologically it fits in this order.
So my favorite part is what happens after the sixth trumpet battle. The 7th trumpet sounds announcing the coronation of the King and so begins the seven bowl judgments. The plagues (or bowl judgments-wrath of God, Rev. 16:1) are poured out in rapid fashion as the means by which the captive Jews are brought home to the land of Israel. (Ezekiel 20:34) God, using plagues, forces captors to release His people. It will be just like the Israelites coming out of Egypt. Actually, God says it will be better, Jeremiah 23:7-8.
So my point in all of this; It is only when Christ returns for the 6th Trumpet battle (when He supernaturally begins to restore the land to “garden of eden” status, (Ezekiel 36:35), and resettles the Jews in their land giving supernatural protection, (Zechariah 2:4-5), that the stage is set for Gog/Magog some thirty days later. Gog/Magog is not a pre-tribulation battle. It doesn’t align with scripture. It doesn’t occur in the first half of the tribulation. The antichrist is still ascending to power, conquering many nations in the middle east forming his coalition. Jerusalem is attacked mid tribulation and half of the surviving Jews are carried into surrounding nations as captives (Zech. 14:2). The regathering of the Jews in the last days of the 70th week is what is referenced in Ezekiel 38:8, not the regathering in May of 1948. The regathering of Israel (1948) is a profoundly important prophetic event. It is a physical regathering of the nation. The regathering of captive Jews from the surrounding nations by the Lord in the final days of the 70th week is a spiritual regathering. (Isaiah 66:8-9). It is of this gathering that Ezekiel 38:8 speaks.

Just a couple of random thoughts on end time events.

  6. I found quite a few erroneous statements. Gog and Magog War absolutely not identical with Armageddon: the number of the nations involved, timing, purpose, geographical location, results, and so many other obvious differences that I would not waste time and space to listing them all. Ezekiel gave very important conditions (Ez. 38:8, 14) — Gog will attack Israel only when those conditions come to pass. And what is the most important, this war will begin at the dawn of the Messianic Age, when the whole House of Israel return from the countries of exile with revealed Messiah in the midst of them. If you would like to know more on the subject, please E-male me and I provide more details to your satisfaction. Thanks,

Think about this; look back to the past 2 World Wars.
Who started BOTH? Aren’t there many similarities in ALL battles and ALL wars?
Germany had lost an empire, a king, world leadership and a strong economy; BUT that just cleared the way for the Nazi Party to take control, something that could not have happened without the change of regimes, hearts & minds. Even the Church was hijacked for the Nazis.
So with the Gog/Magog war, the destruction of the NAMED NATIONS that somewhat align with modern countries, and they’ve always been enemies of God & His people from time immortal; once out of the way the construction of the Third Temple, regathering of ALL the Jews, revival worldwide and Jewish Torah soul searching that leads to spiritual sight and repentance, confession & baptism in Jesus Christ of a great number (many Jews regathered are already Christians). Then we will see a great missionary work by Jewish believers with an incredible response by Gentiles the world over. BUT like all revivals, people eagerly respond then fade away due to the principles Jesus expounded in the Parable of the Sower; especially if the world is in chaos and destruction after the Gog war. Governments, kingdoms, economies, leadership have lost their power & influence; food & medical shortages, radiation, & a collapse of infrastructures makes life difficult to impossible AND the Lord DIDN’T return like the end time prophets said. So once the novelty of a SUPERNATURAL intervention to save Israel wears off, people will be DESPERATE for a strong leader who can deliver “security & safety”, so much so that they will give up all freedom to his program. And Church leadership will follow right along, in the hope to prevent future wars over religion by becoming a one world religion. Ushering in Antichrist once all the walls have fallen.
After Armageddon, and the Lord returns and rules for 1000 years with His Saints, the world again rebels, BUT WHY? Satan is released to deceive the world & create another Gog for all that survived only because they were too young to take the Mark and to fight. They’ve had a perfect government, but in a diminishing earth ravaged by war and pollution. And like the world before, they will make heroes out of the “men of renown” who fought God and invented machines, skyscrapers, roads, monuments, and labor saving equipment. Many will have grown tired of harvesting and raising livestock and living a simple life of family, faith, & farming. Satan will have free reign to test mankind with “lust of the eye, lust of the flesh & pride of life” – 1 John 2:15-17. Then all remaining will show their true hearts and man’s last test is complete.
Just my study and I pray God’s revelation, but all the combined prophesy is not unlike a large puzzle that we are all working to comprehend and need each other’s help not prideful criticism. Only time will reveal the pattern and pieces we don’t yet have. Pray for spiritual discernment, love for the lost, and steadfast faithful service in our Lord Jesus Christ’s Kingdom that we might be “LIGHT” to wittiness to all who will hear the Gospel and “SALT” in a tasteless humanistic world that looks to man for salvation. In & for our Savior, amen
