Who is the “He” in Daniel 9:27?

Although many say the “he” in Daniel 9:27 represents Jesus Christ, we can scripturally prove that it refers to the Antichrist. The last masculine noun in Daniel 9:26 is “the prince that shall come,” not the Messiah. The prince that shall come is the “he” of Daniel 9:27 and refers to the Antichrist. This becomes clearer when we read what this “he” does. We read that he causes the sacrifice to cease and the abomination of desolation. Jesus did not cause sacrifices to cease but rather He was the ultimate sacrifice. People could still make a sacrifice after the death of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ death took away God’s acceptance of animal sacrifices; it did not decree that animal sacrifices could no longer be made. Jesus also did not commit the abomination of desolation. We have conclusive proof that the Antichrist does both of these things in Daniel 8:11-13 and Daniel 11:31. So it is conclusive that the “he” in Daniel 9:27 is the Antichrist.

    Is Torah still in effect ? And what was nailed to the tree when our messiah died?? What are the ordinances and are they done away with ??

    Hello Alphonso,

    To understand what was nailed to the cross, we just need to continue reading the scripture. Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

    15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

    16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

    17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

    18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

    19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

    20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

    21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

    22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

    23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

    I have always thought that this is the antichrist but someone pointed out two things:
    1 “he will cinfirm the covenant for one week.”
    we could say that the Antichrist makes a covenant. that’s what I have always read people say, but Paul says that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision to confirm the promises made to the fathers and the fact that Jesus dies after 3 and a half years of ministry seems to reiterate what the verses directly before talk about. Yes, he doesn’t cause the sacrifices to cease but Hebrews 0 certainly makes them invalid based on the “once for all” sacrifice of Christ. That chapter (Heb. 10) makes a lot of repeated and redundant references to this truth. the only thing that makes this about the prince and not the messiah is that Jesus is cut off AFTER the 69 weeks and that the last verse of Daniel 9 is a subsequent (70th) week.

    Doug Norvell says:

    Hello Erik,

    Jesus said that the Abomination of Desolation would be the starting factor of the Great Tribulation.
    Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand
    21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

    So, clearly Jesus was speaking about the time after His Death, burial and Resurrection this event would happen. Daniel 9:26 says the prince of the people that shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The “he” in Daniel 9:27 refers back to the prince of the people. That people we know from history was Rome. Daniel 9:27 also says “he” will cause the Abomination of Desolation and stop the animal sacrifices. Now, while people try and say that Jesus stopped the animal sacrifices, Jesus did not set up the abomination of desolation. The sacrifices were not stopped until the Temple was destroyed years after Jesus had ascended into Heaven.
    Also Daniel 11 gives us more information about the Antichrist; Daniel 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

    Paul also teaches this as a future event, that will happen in the days just before the return of Jesus and our being gathered unto Him.
    2 Thessalonians 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
    4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

  5. Michael Borden
    Michael Borden says:

    Animal sacrifices can still be made even after Christ became the ultimate sacrifice but the offering of such sacrifice equates to a denial of what Christ has done. It is fair to say that Christ caused sacrifice to cease because he obliterated the efficacy of such sacrifice. Animal sacrifice was previously effective only if done in faith of the God who had ordained such a thing. Now there is a new way to obtain atonement for sin and it is an act of unbelief in the provision of God’s Lamb.

    Roy Anderberg says:

    The “He” in 9:27 is Messiah, not Antichrist. This is also confirmed in Galatians 3:17, where Christ “confirms” the covenant that He made with Abraham, Issac, Jacob, etc.
    Messiah was confirmed to Israel at the baptism by John. At that time, His ministry was started. The demons recognized Him as the Son of God. The Holy Spirit spoke, God Himself spoke at the baptism introducing His Son.
    That event (the baptism), fulfilled verse 25, “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”
    The only event left to fulfill is the final 3-1/2 years of the 70 weeks, which is the “great tribulation.”
    Everything is 3-1/2 years, 1260 days, times. time and half time, etc. There is only 3-1/2 years left of the the 70th week. Christ was the suffering Messiah for 3-1/2 years before His death.

  8. Doug Norvell
    Doug Norvell says:

    Hello Roy,

    Who will cause the Abomination of Desolation and stop the animal sacrifices?
    Daniel 9:27 “he” refers back to the prince of the people that shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Rome 70AD.
    Daniel 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. (This is clearly speaking of the Antichrist).
    The next scripture tells us what the Abomination of desolation is…
    2 Thessalonians 2:1Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

    Jesus said when we see this, it will trigger the great tribulation;
    Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

    So the Temple will have to be rebuilt and sacrifices started again, for the revealing of the antichrist, then the tribulation (3 1/2 years) will begin.

    You have committed a big error. The verse says “ the PEOPLE of the prince” not the prince. The verse refers to Jesus. Secondly, you cannot CONFIRM a covenant that was not made, thirdly the only covenant that was made was by the LORD. Fourthly, the 70th week of Daniel has lasted over 2,000 years. Figure that out if you can. If you cannot, ask me, I can. Consider how long the MIDST OF THEWEEK LASTS.

  10. Werugia Stanley
    Werugia Stanley says:

    Great great error: Jesus did cause sacrifices to cease by His death on the cross by becoming the ultimate sacrifice.

    “People could still make a sacrifice after the death of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ death took away God’s acceptance of animal sacrifices; it did not decree that animal sacrifices could no longer be made”. This assertion is very wrong, because the events that happened in the temple when Jesus died on the cross clearly demonstrate the sacrificial system was brought to an end- God’s growly departed from the temple, and the temple cloth was torn from top bottom. This meant that any more sacrifices made were worthless and in vain.

  11. Doug Norvell
    Doug Norvell says:

    Hello Werugia Stanley,

    The scriptures clearly tell us that the sacrifices will be stopped and the Abomination of Desolation would take place. Jesus told us to be looking for this event as well in Matthew 24:15, He said that the Abomination of Desolation would take place and start the Great Tribulation, and immediately after the Tribulation He (Jesus) will return. And Daniel 11 is telling us about the Antichrist when it says; Daniel 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

    This scripture isn’t speaking of Jesus, it is clearly speaking of the Antichrist, when it says he will take away the daily sacrifice.

    I agree that “he” is referring to the antichrist. I’ve been reading that President Trump has a peace plan (agreement/treaty) in the works between Israel & the Palestinians.
    1. If this 7-year deal/plan is signed, would that identify Trump as the antichrist (to fulfill this prophecy of “he”)?
    2. If/when this peace plan/deal is signed, would that mean it will then be 7 years ( until the Battle of Armageddon & the 2nd coming of Jesus to earth (would the peace deal mean we are at the ‘end times” as mentioned in Scriptures)? (I’m only looking upward for the Rapture).

    I’ve learned through the years that the antichrist will come from Europe, but if a peace plan is signed that the Trump administration put together, what will that say about this prophecy (and the person)?

  13. Doug Norvell
    Doug Norvell says:

    Daniel 9:27 says “he” will confirm with many. So there will be many people involved with this agreement and to confirm means to by definition “make stronger” or agree with. So the Antichrist will be involved in the agreement somehow. We will not know for certain who “he” is until the Abomination of Desolation. When he stops the animal sacrifices and claims to be God.

    I think it’s important to be open minded to new interpretations as more is understood about the time of the end. Here are my thoughts.
    I have studied the discoveries of Ron Wyatt for about 10 years and do believe God helped him as God wanted to show the world proof of Biblical stories; Noah’s Ark, The Red Sea Crossing, Mount Sinai, Sodom and Gomorrah, and The Ark of the Covenant discovery in 1982. Ron stated, “We prayed about it and God led us right to it”. So with this in mind.
    Daniel 9:24 ends with “to anoint the Most Holy”. We now may have eyewitness proof that at the crucifixion, the impossible 24 chromosome blood of Jesus, through an earthquake crack, anointed the Mercy Seat of the Ark. This will be revealed in God’s time and will confirm not a covenant, but The Covenant given by God through the Messiah, Jesus. This event along with the Two Witness testimony could mark the beginning of the 70th week. The first 42 months, the power and plagues of the Two Witnesses, along with their testimony; then at mid point, the Abomination of Desolation by the antichrist; followed by The Great Tribulation. The “He” has to be Jesus, and it looks like when He was cut off, we were given a near exact 2000 year church age to learn the true Love of the Truth.
    My faith that the promise of the New Testament Covenant is for real, has never been stronger.

    Doug Norvell says:

    Jesus did cause the sacrifices to stop for the Jews, who do not believe Jesus is the Messiah. The sacrifices continued until the destruction of the temple in 70 ad.
    Daniel 9:26 tells us that Jesus is indeed the Messiah, that He would be cut off/killed and then the city and the sanctuary would be destroyed. So we know the Temple was destroyed in 70 ad by Rome. Proving the Messiah is Jesus. There will not be a future Messiah to look for only Jesus. The second part of that scripture says the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The prince is the key to who “he” is in 9:27. The Antichrist is the one that will stop the sacrifices and cause the abomination of desolation. 31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
    Daniel 11 confirms this, Daniel 11:

    second Thessalonians 2.4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Note the Temple if God is where he sits. Then will a rebuilt temple by mens hands be God’s temple. 1 corinthians 3.16 1nd 3.17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Note again the same author Paul now calls Man the Temple of God, and the temple of God is Holy. The holy place is the Temple of God. John 2.19 to 2.21 19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? 21 But he spake of the temple of his body. Mathew 27.40 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

    40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Jesus did rebuild the Temple it is His body.

    There will be a Physical Temple built during the last 7 years, that is what Paul is referring to in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4. The Temple was standing at the time Paul wrote the letter to the church in Thessalonica. And John was told to measure the Temple, the altar and the worshippers.
    Revelation 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
    2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

  19. Fred Corlett
    Fred Corlett says:

    The whole prophecy of Daniel chapter 9 refers to the first century Messiah, not to a 21st century “antichrist”. The “he” must refer to the preceding noun in the nominative case – i.e. Messiah. The word, ‘prince’ is in the dative case. The prince was Titus, whose people destroyed the temple, against Titus’ specific command. That week began when Messiah began His ministry. In the midst of that “week” He is ‘cut off’ and the Gospel is offered to the Jews for a further ‘half week’ till they rejected Messiah and the Gospel was then offered to the Gentiles.

    Hello Fred,

    I’m very sorry, but we must agree to disagree. What you are teaching is Preterism and it is a false doctrine.
    Daniel 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

    And verse 36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

    This is the same event that Jesus said would start the great tribulation in Matthew 24:15-21, Jesus also said at the end of the tribulation that He would return and gather His elect. This has not happened yet.
    Paul also wrote that Jesus would not return and gather us together until we see that event.
    2 Thessalonians 2: 1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
    2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
    4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

  21. Matt
    Matt says:

    Everyone is missing one crucial point here – Jesus’ death, which caused SACRIFICE and OFFERING to cease (because He was the true Sacrifice) – is NOT the same thing as the taking away of the CONTINUAL also called THE DAILY. “Sacrifice” is in italics. It was ADDED because the translators were trying to be helpful. Now that we’re in the time of the end, and things are opening up to us, we need to realize that these are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
