House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is the most senior US figure to meet a Taiwanese leader on American soil since 1979. Beijing attacked the “egregiously wrong action” by the US and Taiwan and said it will take “strong and resolute measures to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
