Russia’s War: The Red Horse Rides On

Russia’s War: The Red Horse Rides OnRussian military bloggers are painting a grim picture of the war in Ukraine, claiming that newly deployed Russian soldiers survive an average of only 20 to 35 minutes once they reach the front lines. Reports also indicate many recruits receive only days of training before being sent into some of the deadliest combat zones, where Ukraine’s extensive use of drones has dramatically increased Russian casualties. While these survival estimates have not been independently verified, they underscore the staggering human cost Russia continues to endure as the conflict grinds on. (The Times of India)

From a biblical perspective, this conflict reflects more than the tragedy of war. Revelation 6:4 describes the red horse, which was given power “to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another.” Throughout Scripture, the color red is also associated with the spiritual force symbolized by the red horse, while Zechariah 6 portrays colored horses as spiritual forces operating among the nations. Within this prophetic framework, communism and socialism have historically demonstrated the destructive characteristics of that red horse spirit by bringing violence, oppression, and the killing of their own people.

History bears this out. Under Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union was responsible for the deaths of millions through forced collectivization, famine, political purges, executions, labor camps, and state repression. Most historians estimate that Stalin’s regime caused the deaths of 6 to 9 million people directly, with some scholarly estimates reaching much higher when famine and broader state policies are included. Likewise, Mao Zedong’s communist rule in China resulted in one of history’s deadliest man-made disasters. During the Great Leap Forward alone, historians estimate that approximately 30 to 45 million Chinese died from famine, forced labor, and political policies. These were not foreign enemies. They were their own citizens.

Today, Russia continues that tragic pattern. Not only did Russia initiate the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, unleashing a war that has shattered peace across Europe, but reports now indicate thousands of poorly trained Russian recruits are being sacrificed in relentless assaults. The conflict illustrates both aspects of Revelation 6:4: the red horse takes peace from the earth, and people kill one another. Ukraine and Russia share deep historical, cultural, and ancestral ties dating back to Kievan Rus, making the bloodshed even more tragic as closely related peoples continue fighting one another.

While this war is not itself the fulfillment of a specific end-time prophecy, it demonstrates the ongoing influence of the spirit behind the red horse described in Scripture. As the world moves closer to the final prophetic events, believers should expect increasing conflict, instability, and authoritarian ideologies that value power over human life. Jesus warned that wars and rumors of wars would characterize the days preceding His return (Matthew 24:6-7), reminding us that mankind’s ultimate hope is not found in earthly governments but in the coming Kingdom of God.
