Pope Appoints Controversial Economist

Pope Francis has appointed Columbia University-based economist Jeffrey Sachs as a member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, surprising Catholic conservatives who question whether his statements and work on moral and ethical issues conflict with fundamental Church teachings.

Sachs, who was born in 1954 in Detroit, Michigan, is the President of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
