Can End Time Bible Prophecy Be Understood?

Many people claim Bible prophecy cannot be clearly understood until after it has been fulfilled. If that were true, however, why did God place so much prophecy in His Word? Why did Jesus repeatedly instruct His followers to watch? And how could believers recognize prophetic events if they had no understanding of what to look for?

The Bible teaches that end time prophecy can be understood. Daniel, Jesus Christ, the apostle Paul and John the Revelator all pointed to a generation that would recognize the signs, understand the times and instruct others.

That generation is alive today.

Jesus Commanded His Followers to Watch

Jesus did not tell His followers to ignore prophecy or wait until events were over before attempting to understand them.

In Matthew 24:33, He said:

“So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.”

Jesus expected His followers to see prophetic events and recognize what they meant. In Mark 13:37, He gave a command that applies to every generation:

“And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”

But what are Christians supposed to watch for if prophecy cannot be understood?

God gave prophecy so His people could recognize its fulfillment. Jesus explained this principle in John 14:29:

“And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.”

Prophecy demonstrates that God knows the end from the beginning. When events foretold hundreds or thousands of years in advance come to pass, they confirm the supernatural accuracy of Scripture and build faith in the Word of God.

The Day of the Lord Should Not Overtake the Church

The apostle Paul also taught that believers should understand the times in which they live.

In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul warned that the day of the Lord would come as a thief in the night upon those who were spiritually unprepared. He then made an important distinction:

“But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.”

Paul continued:

“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”

The world may be caught unaware, but the church should not be. God does not intend for His people to walk blindly into the events of the last days. He has given us prophetic warnings so we can remain spiritually alert, understand what is happening and respond according to His Word.

What Does “The End Time” Mean?

The phrase “end time” is often misunderstood. Many immediately think it refers to the destruction of the earth, the final judgment or the beginning of eternity.

That is not what the disciples were asking about in Matthew 24.

They asked Jesus about the sign of His coming and “the end of the world.” The Greek word translated “world” in the King James Version is aion, meaning “age.”

They were asking about the end of the age.

The end time is the period leading to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the Battle of Armageddon and the transition from human government to the kingdom of God.

At the Second Coming, Jesus will return to establish His kingdom on the earth. Revelation teaches that the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ. Human government will give way to the righteous rule of Jesus Christ.

Daniel 2:44 declares that God will establish a kingdom that will never be destroyed.

This is the great hope of Bible prophecy. Jesus Christ is coming back.

The Wise Shall Understand

The prophet Daniel received some of the Bible’s greatest end time prophecies, yet he did not fully understand everything he recorded.

When Daniel asked about the meaning and timing of these events, God told him:

“Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.”

The prophecies were not sealed forever. They were sealed until a particular time.

Daniel 12:10 explains:

“None of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.”

The “wise” are not necessarily those with extraordinary intelligence. They are those who study the Word of God, seek His face and remain spiritually attentive to the fulfillment of prophecy.

Daniel 11:32-33 describes believers living during the time of the Antichrist:

“The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many.”

That passage presents a serious question: How can God’s people instruct many if they cannot understand the prophecies?

The Bible clearly says there will be people who understand.

Prophecy Was Reserved for the Time of the End

Previous generations could not have fully understood many of Daniel’s visions because the nations, institutions and political structures described in them had not yet developed.

Daniel could not have recognized the modern nations that would exist near the time of the Second Coming. The apostles lived under the Roman Empire, but they could not have seen the later development of Europe, the Holy Roman Empire or the global political systems that would eventually emerge.

The information was incomplete because the fulfillment was still far in the future.

Today, however, we can look back across centuries of history and see prophetic pieces moving into place. Developments involving world government, world religion, Israel, the Middle East, global conflict, financial control and emerging technologies can be examined alongside the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation.

This does not mean modern prophecy teachers are more intelligent or more spiritual than previous generations. It means we are living at a time when the prophetic picture has become clearer.

It is time for the end time church to understand.

Prophecy Is a Tool for Revival

The purpose of studying Bible prophecy is not to win arguments, impress others or create fear.

The purpose is to preach the gospel of the kingdom and help people believe the Word of God.

Revelation 19:10 says:

“The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Prophecy points people to Jesus Christ.

When someone sees that the Bible accurately foretold events long before they occurred, faith begins to grow. A skeptic may begin to recognize that Scripture is not an ordinary book. An unbeliever may become willing to hear the gospel. A Christian may awaken to the urgency of the hour.

That is why prophecy can become one of the greatest soul-winning tools available to the church.

The ultimate message is not merely that difficult events are coming. The ultimate message is that every person has sinned, every person needs salvation, and every person can be born again through Jesus Christ.

Bible prophecy should lead people to repentance, faith and preparation for the kingdom of God.

Prophecy Replaces Fear With Understanding

Some accuse prophecy teachers of attempting to frighten people. But properly understood Bible prophecy does not produce panic. It produces preparation.

Without prophecy, the rapid changes taking place around the world can appear confusing and overwhelming. People see war, political instability, globalism, religious deception, financial surveillance and unrest, yet they do not know how the pieces fit together.

The Bible gives believers a framework.

Prophecy helps us know what to watch for, what to avoid, what to support and how to remain faithful during perilous times. It allows us to guide our families, friends and others within our sphere of influence.

Most importantly, believers can face the future without fear because their hope is in Jesus Christ.

A born-again Christian knows that no matter what happens in this world, eternal life is secure in Him.

Can End Time Prophecy Be Understood?

Absolutely.

Jesus said, “Whoso readeth, let him understand,” when speaking about the abomination of desolation in Matthew 24. He expected His followers to understand that prophecy so they could recognize the event when it occurred.

Daniel said the wise would understand.

Paul said the church should not be overtaken as a thief.

Jesus commanded everyone to watch.

The biblical evidence is clear: God does not want His church to remain unaware.

We are living during a period of rapid prophetic fulfillment. The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is approaching, and the church must prepare—not by withdrawing from the world or waiting passively, but by understanding the times, teaching others and participating in the end time harvest.

If not the church, then who?

If not now, then when?

The end time is now. The wise will understand, and those who understand will instruct many.
