Putin the “Antichrist”?
The leader of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine called Putin the “Kremlin Antichrist” after a disturbing strikes on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex.
Russia’s latest wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine has sparked international outrage after the historic Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex—one of Christianity’s most revered sites and a UNESCO World Heritage location—was damaged during the assault. Ukrainian officials reported significant destruction at the monastery complex, while the leader of Ukraine’s Orthodox Church condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin as the “Kremlin Antichrist” following the strike.
The attack came as Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles against Ukraine. The damage to the centuries-old religious site drew comparisons to Nazi Germany’s bombing of St. Paul’s Cathedral during World War II and prompted condemnation from Ukrainian and international leaders. Russia denied targeting the monastery, claiming the damage was caused by a Ukrainian air-defense missile, a claim rejected by Ukrainian officials.
The incident highlights the continuing devastation of the Russia-Ukraine war and raises concerns about the destruction of religious and cultural landmarks amid the conflict. As diplomatic efforts continue, including discussions involving President Donald Trump, the strikes underscore the ongoing instability in Eastern Europe and the broader geopolitical tensions shaping the region.
