UN Security Council to Hold Session on Middle East, Focus on Settlements

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet on Tuesday for its regular session on “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question,” with particular attention to settlement activity. Council members are expected to hear two briefings. The first will be delivered by Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alakbarov, followed by a briefing from Nickolay Mladenov, Director of the Gaza Board of Peace. Alakbarov will present the quarterly update on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2334, adopted in December 2016, which calls on Israel to cease all settlement  activity in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. Mladenov, for his part, is expected to outline progress on implementing Security Council Resolution 2803, which endorsed a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump to end the war in Gaza.

The meeting comes as international focus on the region remains high, alongside ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the conflict. (QNA)
