Putin Says Threat of Nuclear War is Increasing

In a recent meeting Putin said, “In terms of the threat of nuclear war, you are right: Such threat is increasing.” Russia’s nuclear doctrine permits the use of a low-yield nuclear weapon in an “escalate to de-escalate” strategy in which Russia would resort to using such a weapon when facing a significant threat from conventional weapons, under the belief that other countries would not retaliate with another nuclear weapon.
