Pestilence on the Rise: Another Sign of the Times?
A growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis has now spread to more than half of the United States, with confirmed cases reported in 31 states and hundreds of illnesses under investigation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the parasitic infection, which causes severe gastrointestinal illness, has hospitalized dozens of Americans while investigators continue searching for the source. Health officials believe contaminated food or water is responsible, but no single nationwide source has yet been identified.
While foodborne outbreaks occur from time to time, the rapid expansion of this illness across so many states serves as another reminder of Jesus’ warning concerning the conditions that would characterize the last days.
In Matthew 24:7, Jesus declared that “pestilences” would be among the signs preceding His return.
Scripture does not suggest that every outbreak fulfills prophecy by itself, but increasing disease outbreaks fit the broader pattern Christ described.
The uncertainty surrounding the source of this outbreak also raises an important question. At a time when the United States faces mounting geopolitical tensions with adversarial nations, including an ongoing conflict with Iran and growing hostility from other global rivals, some may wonder whether America’s enemies could seek to exploit biological agents or food supplies to weaken the nation. At present, there is no public evidence that this outbreak was intentionally caused or linked to a hostile act. Investigators continue to treat it as a public health investigation while tracing the source of the contamination.
Whether this outbreak proves to be a naturally occurring food-borne event or something else entirely, it reminds us that our world is becoming increasingly fragile. Jesus instructed His followers not to live in fear but to watch, pray, and recognize the signs of the times. As pestilences, wars, global instability, and other prophetic indicators continue to increase, believers should remain spiritually prepared and continue proclaiming the Gospel while there is still time.
