‘The Western Wall belongs only to Muslims’

The Supreme Islamic Council in Jerusalem on Monday dismissed comments by senior Fatah official Jibril Rajoub regarding the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Rajoub spoke on Saturday to Channel 2 News, saying that the Western Wall must remain under “Jewish sovereignty.”

“We understand that the wall… is sacred for Jews. At the end of the day it must be under Jewish sovereignty, there is no doubt about it,” he said.

In Monday’s statement, the Supreme Islamic Council stated that the Al-Aqsa Mosque, whose area includes the Western Wall, belongs to Muslims only, and that it would remain this way until Judgment Day.

While the statement did not directly refer to Rajoub’s comments in the Channel 2 interview, it condemned the “false” statements in the Israeli media which said that “the Jews have a right to the Western Wall”.

These statements, according to the Supreme Islamic Council, are a falsification of the historical facts about the Western Wall, which is is a holy place for Muslims only.

It further claimed that the area of the Al-Aqsa Mosque is 144 dunams and includes the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and the entire area between the walls, including the Western Wall. According to the statement, the Al-Aqsa Mosque is not subject to court or government decisions and it cannot be negotiated or given up on.
