Trump administration vows to remain in Syria until civil war ends — and Iran retreats

The Trump administration has opened a new chapter in American involvement in Syria, vowing to remain until the civil war’s conclusion in a bid to halt Iran’s expansion across the Middle East.

The vision articulated last week by senior U.S. officials marks a dramatic reversal six months after President Donald Trump said he would pull American troops out of Syria and end U.S. involvement in a conflict that has killed at least half a million people and confounded two administrations.

James Jeffrey, the State Department’s special representative for Syria, said the United States would maintain a presence in the country, possibly including an extended military mission, until Iran withdraws the soldiers and militia forces it commands. U.S. officials expect that possible outcome only after world powers broker a deal ending the war.

“The president wants us in Syria until that and the other conditions are met,” Jeffrey told reporters Thursday, saying the U.S. withdrawal was also linked to achieving a lasting defeat of Islamic State militants.

Personally, I wonder if this is a good idea. I mean, America’s military is already stretched thin, across the globe.
It does, however, remind me of when USSen. Zell Miller (DGA) had been tapped by Georgia’s ultraliberal governor (Roy Barnes) to continue the unexpired term of USSen. Paul Coverdell – a duly elected Republican, who had died in office.
Miller, who had preceded Barnes as governor, became a thorn in the side of the DNC by opposing just about everything they supported. He went so far as to demand, “The Democrats have left the will of the people.”
He also demanded that, except for the murders of so many unborn children, our military would be much, much larger – and mightier, now.

Lastly, for anyone, who denies that America’s military might shouldn’t be so weakened, I wonder what will happen, should Russia and two or three of the Muslim nations decide to get together and attack us.
