Switzerland lifts Iran sanctions

On Thursday, Switzerland lifted its sanctions against Iran in a show of support for the recently negotiated Iran nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 (the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, France and Germany). The agreement, which aims to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, is beginning to open up Iran to the world.

 

A statement from the Swiss government said that “The Federal Council [government] wishes today’s steps to be seen as a sign of its support for the implementation of the nuclear agreement and its interest in deepening bilateral relations with Iran.”

 

Iran’s nuclear program has isolated it from the international community. Under sanctions from the major powers, Iran has been closed off to the world.
