Shock as Merkel’s business leaders rally AGAINST integration plans

Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU), along with their Bavarian sister party the CSU, are working against the clock to thrash out a deal with the centre-left SDP after months of failed negotiations. But now the CDU’s Economic Council, which represents the interests of around 12,000 small and medium-sized businesses, has raised concerns the alliance will serve to support radical EU reforms championed by the likes of Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. One of the pair’s mooted changes is the concept of a European transfer union, which would involve the creation of a new fund to bail out struggling EU economies. In an open letter to negotiators in the CDU/CSU – known collectively as the Union – and members of the German parliament, the Economic Council warns a coalition with the SPD would accelerate the creation of a transfer union and lead to even more ”centralism, bureaucracy and redistribution”.
