S-300 deal between Russia and Iran hits a snag: reports

Talks for Russia to supply Iran with the advanced S-300 surface-to-air missile system are being held up over Russia’s request that Iran end its lawsuit for failure to deliver the technology under a previous contract.

According to a report published on Wednesday by the state-run TASS news agency, a source in the Russian military-technical cooperation establishment said that the negotiations over a new contract are continuing, but the two countries are still disagreeing on how to deal with Iran’s lawsuit.

The source said that while “consultations are in progress, a final agreement has not been reached yet.

According to the source, Iran says it will revoke the lawsuit regarding the previous contract when it gets the first batch of products under the new one, while Russia insists the lawsuit should be revoked before it takes any action under the newly-concluded deal.”

According to the source cited in the report, Russia is firm in its commitment to provide Iran with the air defense system, with the source suggesting that a compromise was possible.
