Remember the Doomsday Plane?

It seems like a long time since everyone was talking about such things as doomsday scenarios, first strike capability, mutual assured destruction, “the end of civilization as we know it” and so on. We don’t like to think about such things. Do you remember the President’s doomsday plane? Well, it’s still around. Actually, there are four of them. Forbes reported this month that the doomsday planes are in the process of being upgraded.

In 2012, “America’s Doomsday Plan,” a Discovery Channel documentary, revealed how the President’s Doomsday plane was any of the four Boeing 747s “tricked out to weather the apocalypse.” According to the documentary, it had “everything senior leadership would need to defend America from the air,” during a catastrophe. At that time, it was called the “most technologically advanced airborne system in the world” and a “747 on steroids.”

 

 

Today, the technical name for the doomsday plane is E-4B, a “National Airborne Operations Center”. It can be launched in minutes, because it is always on high alert, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In 2012, much of the plane’s technology remained from the1980s, which could have a good thing. Some of the older gear is less susceptible to hacking or breaking down. Today’s state-of-the-art technology includes electromagnetic pulse shielding and a five-mile long trailing antenna for transmitting to missile submarines.

 

 

The doomsday plane was commissioned by President Reagan in the 1980s, toward the end of the Cold War, when nuclear tensions were still at their peak. Today, Mikhail Gorbachev says that we are in the middle of a new Cold War. There is now a dangerous rift between Russia and the United States and her NATO allies. The West has tried to isolate Russia since the superpower annexed Crimea in March.

 

 

Thinking about a new Cold War and nuclear survival contingencies makes us feel uncomfortable. However, the threat is real. Iran is only one of the countries working to achieve or improve nuclear capability. Bible prophecy teaches that World War III will originate in the area of the Euphrates River, and that it will kill one-third of mankind (Revelation 9:15). It is unavoidable. It is in your Bible. And Bible prophecies always come to pass.
