Palestinian leader to visit Iran, talk about Israel’s nuclear program

Ahmed Majdalani, a top aide to Abbas, was in Tehran in recent days making arrangements for the Abbas visit. He handed Chinese officials a letter from Abbas explaining the situation in the Palestinian territories and complaining of Israeli assaults on Palestinians and their holy places, according to the official Chinese Xinhua news agency.

Majdalani, a member of the PLO’s executive committee, told reporters that the visit of the Palestinian delegation he led to Iran is aimed at “correcting” Palestinian ties with the Islamic Republic.

The two sides agreed to form a joint committee to cooperate on political issues, trade exchange and education.

Ties between the Palestinian Authority and Iran deteriorated in recent years over Iran’s support for Hamas and other splinter groups opposed to Abbas and his leadership.
