Mourn on the 4th of July

As New Hampshire partied through Independence Day, GOP presidential hopefuls saw only the death of the American Dream.

DERRY, N.H. — It was the 4th of July weekend on Island Pond. Birds chirped, children laughed, men fished. Dozens of friends and neighbors gathered in a backyard on the water to eat fresh-grilled hot dogs and listen to Rick Perry speak. They didn’t know how bad they had it.

 

“We’re on high alert because of ISIS. … We’ve seen America step back time after time after time,” said Perry. With power boats bobbing placidly at the dock behind him, he spoke of a nation “in the ditch economically” and “not in a very good position internationally,” and of 9,000 American graves at Omaha Beach, facing west across the Atlantic, “lying there in silent judgment of us.”
