The South Carolina legislature has rankled liberal groups after requiring that a pair of public schools use state funds to teach the U.S. Constitution and other founding documents — on the heels of a budget fight over gay-themed books in the curriculum.

State House lawmakers previously had cut funds from two public universities in retaliation for required-reading material containing homosexual themes. A revised budget passed by both the House and the Senate earlier this month, though, restored the money — but dictated that exact amount be spent “for instruction in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Federalist Papers, including the study of and devotion to American institutions and ideals.”

The bill restored at least $52,000 for the College of Charleston, and at least $17,000 for USC-Upstate, which were the original amounts cut back in March. The legislation also says that any school that conducts a mandatory reading program must provide an alternative in case the chosen book conflicts with any students’ moral or religious beliefs.

  1. Lauvas sirds

    Translate with google:
I like cakes. I do not see where the problem is..
He had to be good at eating this cake, right?
All this mess for a cake. It’s really stupid. lol

  2. This is a non-sensical notion being pressed by the right-wing church (the dames people that maneuvered us into the Iraq war.
Gay people are U.S. Citizens and have the legal right to marry. If you want the privledge of operating a business in the USA then you cannot deny products or services to citizens engaging in legal activities.
Now, is that hard to understand?
My religion tells me interracial marriage is wrong: can I deny them a westing cake in my bakery?
My religion tells me blacks are right to be enslaved: Can I do it now under religious freedom?
I want to deny the Jew service by my business: They killed our Lord !
Now, can I deny any of these my businesses products or services so I can ‘exercise my religion under clear conscious’??
Church- The Lord Jesus told us to not take issue with the splinter in another’s eye while there’s a cedar lodged in our own.
50% of the Church are engaged in non-biblical (adulterous remarriages & multiple divorces) marriages) and you have the temerity to try and tear down people who actually WANT to be married?!
    Repent Church

    • You are not understanding the case. This baker has no problem baking a cake for a gay person. They wanted him to create a gay wedding cake for the ceremony. He refused to do that. Do you understand what free enterprise is?
He should not have to violate his religious beliefs for money. This is the entire point of religious liberty.
How can you claim to be a Christian and not understand this?
This has nothing to do with discrimination.
This is phony outrage. This couple was not offended, this is purely mean spirited and they wanted revenge because they are unhappy inside.

    • James, I meant narrow in the sense that the court was not taking the bakers position for the reasons the church would have liked. It’s was a very narrow, technical ruling in scope; not narrow in terms of how many justices agreed.
