Indiana Governor Mike Pence explains new ‘religious freedom’ law

A new Indiana law that could allow discrimination against lesbians and gays has drawn a lot of ire from people and companies around the country this week.

 

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act prevents the government from infringing on a person’s ability to follow their religious beliefs, which opponents say will allow businesses to legally discriminate against the gay community.

 

Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized the law in a widely read op-ed in The Washington Post, and the band Wilco canceled an upcoming concert in Indianapolis, saying the legislation “feels like thinly disguised legal discrimination.”
