Are You Trendy?

Is it trendy to keep following the way that works?

By Anthony Vandagriff

I remember growing up and going to school basically wearing the clothes my parents picked out for me, until I noticed what the “cool kids” were wearing. Baggy jeans with the extreme wide legs were hot! Everyone had them and that’s what I wanted. I got them and wore them for maybe a year or two and then things changed. In fact, within about ten years, guys started wearing jeans that looked like they were painted on. You know, the ones where you can count the exact change in the person’s pocket. Thankfully, when that trend started I wasn’t moved by the hottest trends. The thing is, trends come and go. The idea of something new and change is not long lasting but there are some things that never die, the classics.

When something is classic it is categorized as something of the highest rank or class. So hearing something’s a classic means it is timeless and the best. Classics were made years ago but still hold their integrity today. Just think back about a few things with me. Remember how it was cool to give a friend “dap” or to “pound it?” Funny how the “handshake” never lost its thunder. Consider the new looks the fashion industry tries to promote; yet people continually try to achieve the classy look of Sinatra and Jackie O. Michael Bublé, a phenomenal singer of our time who by no means am I dissing, sings the good old classic songs but not even he can replace the unforgettable voice of Nat King Cole. My point is, trends are made to try to find the next best thing when it’s already been found. Society ventures out to find something better only to revert back to the classics. Why keep changing from the best or from what works only to go back to it? Consistency is key. The Bible tells us Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The disciples followed in the same ways of Jesus. They filled Jerusalem with their doctrine, the message of Jesus Christ.

Do you think they would’ve accomplished that if they would’ve started following a new trend? I’m positive they would not have been able to do that. So if we want to do something great and we want to make an impact, is it really trendy to stop doing what works? Or is it trendy to keep following the way that works? Sure you can go “planking” like it was cool to do for a month but why not keep to the classic trends of Jesus Christ and accomplish great things? I know new things come around that are cool but don’t leave the things that pay off in the end for the things that grant momentary happiness. Don’t forsake class for swag. Don’t leave the teachings of Jesus for the idea of some guy. Truly be trendy and stick with the classics.
