A Temple on the Temple Mount?

The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. Its destruction has now been a pain in the Jewish heart for almost 2,000 years. Is there any end in sight?

When David Ben Gurion declared Israel’s independence on May 14, 1948 many Jews believed the Third Temple would soon be built. Instead the Arabs launched a war against the newborn state the very next day.

When Israel captured the Temple Mount on June 7, 1967 Shlomo Goren, Chief Rabbi of the Israeli Defense Forces, handed General Uzi Narkis a bundle of dynamite. He urged the General to blow up the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque. Goren told Uzi that the time of Israel’s redemption had arrived. General Uzi warned the Rabbi to be quiet or he would have to put him in jail. Goren walked away sadly.

A few hours later, Israel’s secular government invited the Muslim Waqf to return to the Temple Mount as caretakers of the Muslim shrines there. As a result, Jews have been forbidden to pray or worship on the Temple Mount for the forty-six years since that time.

But Things Are Changing

Yisrael Ariel founded the Temple Institute in 1967 shortly after the reunification of Jerusalem. Rabbi Ariel served in the paratrooper brigade, which liberated the Temple Mount in the 1967 War and was one of the first soldiers to reach the Temple Mount.

The Temple Institute’s stated goal is to build Israel’s Third Temple on the Temple Mount. Over the past forty-six years, the Temple Institute has recreated almost all the vessels and utensils needed for the resumption of worship in the temple as was conducted in First and Second Temple times.

The Institute unveiled the last and most important piece of furniture in the spring of 2013. A new Ark of the Covenant now stands on display in the Temple Institute Museum in the Old City of Jerusalem.

A Temple Institute representative proudly stated, if the political obstacles to building Israel’s Third Temple were removed today, the Institute would be ready to begin temple administration tomorrow.

Does the Israeli Government Favor Rebuilding the Temple?

On August 4, 2013 the Jerusalem Post revealed a fact that until then had gone unreported. Over the course of the last decade the Education Ministry and the Culture and Sport Ministry of the Israeli government have transferred between 300,000 and 700,000 Sheqels to The Temple Institute. In 2012, the group received 282,000 Sheqels from the Education Ministry and another 134,000 Sheqels from the Culture Ministry. This amounts to over $100,000 during the last year.

Will the Temple be Rebuilt?

On November 4, 2013 a proposal was made on the floor of the Israeli Knesset to allow Jews to openly worship on the Temple Mount. This precipitated quite a shouting match between Israeli and Arab Knesset members. But the sharing of the Temple Mount is now being openly discussed.

The Temple Mount dispute will be resolved when a peace agreement is finally reached between the Palestinians and Israelis. When the agreement is concluded it will provide for the sharing of the Temple Mount between Muslims and Jews. This will inevitably lead to the building of Israel’s temple on the portion of the Temple Mount placed under Israel’s control. US Secretary of State John Kerry has set a deadline of April 29, 2014, for this peace agreement to be achieved.

A Temple on the Temple Mount?

Absolutely. The Bible prophesies in several places, that it will happen.
